ANGELA COLE, YORKSHIRE WILLOW BASKETS

Angela is a contemporary artist - basket maker, deeply rooted in traditional, heritage skills.

She combines woven willow with woodland materials, making functional, sculptural baskets.

Angela’s designs are inspired by the coppicing cycle, by cultivated and found natural materials and the physical work of making. Working with nature is an essential part of the creative process, she follows the seasons, putting nature first; her work is completely sustainable.

Angela achieved her City and Guilds Basketry Diploma with outstanding results and was selected by Cockpit Arts for professional development. She has received awards from the Basketmakers Association and The York Foundation for Conservation and Craftsmanship. Her work has been the subject of professional photography projects and is exhibited locally and nationally.

Angela is exhibiting the two trugs in this exhibition, and they both have a lovely story.

‘No.3 Flower Trug’ - was a suggestion from Angela’s mum when she first began basket making. Angela was not convinced but went ahead and worked on the design. They have been adapted and improved over the years, but have always been a great success, particularly with flower growers.

‘No.2 Deep basket’ is a design she has not made for a while, though it has remained on her website. Recently the  Kelmscott Manor curator wished to order two, and although Angela suggested another design, the team very sure they wanted this style. Hence I revived and improved the  the design, and two now sit in the rooms in the museum. Through re-making Angela fell in love with the basket again and made three more, though slightly deeper.
